ABOUT ROXIE ATEAH

"Boreal Granny"

I’ve been working with Folklore medicine for a lifetime! This is who I am, because I was born into it, inheriting teachings from folklore medicine people, midwives, and western medical doctors and nurses.  Officially I’ve been practicing for 38 years; working with friends, family and my local community.

I’ve been actively involved in the homebirth and homeschooling community since childhood. I walk with my medicine teachings in an honest way;  I will help if I can, and if I can’t, I will not pretend that I can, instead I will offer support and help in finding the appropriate resources. I have formal education, as well as I am educated in decolonized and alternative perspectives which I have learned from other Elders and wisdom keepers.

Since my ‘grandmotherhood’, I have been called by my community to offer services in Folklore Wellness and Healing.  I call myself a folk practitioner and I find this keeps me humble, and out of ego.

It is incredibly important to me that people be allowed access to traditional medicines especially those who have been taken from their homeland, abused and neglected. I offer spaces that contain empathy, openness and encourage hope.

And yes, I really am a backwoods granny with a gentle touch.

The older I become the more I  am in awe of this woman, my mum. She truly was the first to inspire and encourage a decolonized form of education.  My mother actually was one of those "our bodies, ourselves" women.  She attended the first women's studies groups that came to our small town.  Old ways and modern activism were very much a part of her life.  I call her the "David Suzuki" of our area, because she is! In her mid 50's while working full time as a Registered Nurse, she began studying at University again in her spare time, because why not! She encouraged me to home birth my children, and connected me to midwifery and to women's traditional medicine.
